Hey folks, been diving into homelabs for a bit and set up a Synology NAS to start, but now it's a pain with the drive restrictions, basically forcing you to use their branded HDDs only. That’s not working for me at all, especially since I want flexibility with hardware.
Looking for solid alternatives that are reliable, have a good track record, and let you pop in any standard HDD without issues. Things like TrueNAS or unRAID keep coming up in my searches, but I'm curious what you're all running in your setups. Any comparisons on ease of use, performance, or community support?
Also, quick thoughts on best practices for picking a NAS, say, for general storage, backups, or even media streaming. Appreciate any tips or stories from your own experiences!
