Building a NAS for media with Jellyfin and general storage, using 5x 24TB Seagate BarraCuda drives in RAIDz2 for redundancy. These are CMR drives, and I've seen them drop to around $250 on Newegg. Trying to stick to the 3-2-1 backup rule, but have some thoughts on how to handle backups:
- Would it make sense to use another 5x 24TB set in RAIDz2 for backups too?
- Or could I go with something different, like RAID1 or separate drives?
- If I mix things up, could that lead to problems later on?
- Is there an upside to keeping backups identical to the main setup, maybe for easier management?
What do folks here do for their homelab backups? Any experiences with ZFS alternatives or tips on avoiding common pitfalls? Appreciate any advice or setups you've tried!
